Who is St. Francis?

St. Francis was born during the 12th century and lived in Italy. He founded the men’s Order of Friars Minor and the women’s Order of St. Clare for those who are unable to lead the life of an itinerant preacher. Francis is one of the most revered religious figures of all time.

His generosity to the poor and willingness to serve the lepers are some of his most enduring memories. He also has a fond memory for his love for nature and animals. He is the patron saint of the environment and animals in the Catholic Church.


What are the characteristics and traits of St Francis of Assisi?

His Spirit. Francis was one of the best troubadours in the 13th century. He was happy, he sang and he loved the natural world. He spoke to birds and animals like they were his best friends. He wrote about Brother Sun, Sister Moon in his “Canticle of Creatures”, also known as “Canticle of the Sun”.


Why is St Francis of Assisi important?

Francis is one of the most revered religious figures in Roman Catholic Catholic history. He was the founder of the Franciscan orders including the Poor Clares, and the lay Third Order. He is the patron saint of Italy along with St. Catherine of Siena. Patron saint of ecology, and patron saint of animals.


What did St Francis of Assisi have to say about animals?

“The heavens, the earth, and the sea are home to the animals God created. They play a role in human life. Therefore, we invoke God’s blessing for these animals. Overall creatures of the Earth.”
